Sean McConnell
Strength Coach
With a deep commitment to helping others unlock their physical potential, Sean McConnell brings both professional expertise and personal experience to his role as a strength and conditioning coach at Smith Performance Center. Sean’s coaching philosophy is built on two core principles: mastering the fundamentals and maintaining consistency. He believes that by focusing on these elements, anyone can achieve their goals, no matter how daunting they may seem or where they start. He frequently reminds his clients that “the best exercise is the one you will do,” highlighting his focus on practicality and sustainability.
Sean’s fitness journey began with his own struggles. Like many, he has faced the challenges of inactivity, pain, and the desire to feel better, move more, and improve long-term health. His pursuit of solutions to improve his own health and overcome recurrent pain inspired him to help others do the same. This personal connection to the work fuels his dedication to continuous learning and providing real-world fitness solutions for his clients.
With years of experience, Sean has played an important role in shaping Smith Performance Center’s current processes, particularly in managing emergent injuries and refining our standard programming. One of Sean’s major contributions is the development of the 5-Step Assessment, an innovative system that identifies the specific obstacles preventing clients from reaching their workout goals, whether related to accountability, chronic injury, or improper technique. He aims to guide clients through a structured plan that addresses these barriers and ensures long-term success.
Sean also spearheaded the integration of Open Clinic, which offers immediate care for unexpected injuries, seamlessly connecting the physical therapy team and the coaching staff. This integration has allowed clients to stay on track with their goals, even when setbacks arise.
When asked about the biggest challenge for new exercisers dealing with pain or uncertainty, Sean advises, “Avoid the tendency to overcomplicate things. Look for small wins in each workout. Simplicity and consistency on the front end, where you know the purpose of each workout, lead to long-term progress.“
Sean has a particular interest in movement dysfunction, exercising through the rehab standard, functional strength and conditioning for longevity, and developing strategies to enhance exercise adherence. His thoughtful, client-centered approach has helped countless individuals not only reach their fitness goals but also build a lasting foundation for a healthier life.
