Frequently Asked Questions for Our Dietitian
Dietitian Services at Smith Performance Center
Dietitians can help with a wide range of goals, including optimizing athletic performance, improving energy levels, promoting recovery, enhancing energy and body composition, managing chronic health concerns, building sustainable eating habits, and fueling for training, competition, and daily life.
“Dietitian” (RD or RDN) is a legally protected credential that requires accredited education, supervised clinical training, passing a national exam, and ongoing continuing education. Registered Dietitians are qualified to provide medical nutrition therapy and work with specific health conditions.
The term “nutritionist” is not regulated in many states and can be used by people with very different levels of training—or no formal training at all. While some nutritionists may have solid education, the title alone does not guarantee standardized credentials or clinical qualifications.
If you’re looking for evidence-based, personalized guidance—especially for medical concerns, injury recovery, performance goals, or chronic conditions—working with a Registered Dietitian ensures you’re getting care from a credentialed professional.
We do not accept insurance. Payment is self-pay at the time of service. If needed, we can provide a receipt (superbill) upon request for clients who wish to submit for potential out-of-network reimbursement through their insurance provider.
No referral is needed. You can schedule directly with our dietitian without a physician’s referral.
You can schedule an appointment directly through our online booking form or by contacting our front desk at 520-398-4886. Once scheduled, you’ll receive information on preparing for your first visit.
Before your visit, you’ll receive an initial intake form to complete so we can learn more about your goals, health history, and current habits. If you’ve had bloodwork done within the last 3 months, bringing those results can be helpful (but it’s not required). Come ready to talk about your routine, challenges, and what you’d like to work on—we’ll take it from there.
During your initial visit, the dietitian will review your goals, medical and activity history, current eating patterns, and lab or performance data if available. Together, you’ll begin crafting a tailored nutrition strategy built around your lifestyle and priorities.
After your first session, you’ll leave with clear, personalized action steps to start implementing right away. Follow-up visits are used to check progress, troubleshoot challenges, and adjust your nutrition strategy as your goals, training, or lifestyle change. Over time, the focus shifts from guided support to building confidence and independence so you can sustain results long-term.
This depends on your goals and motivation. Some clients benefit from a few focused consultations, while others engage in ongoing sessions for monitoring, progress tracking, and strategy refinement. We know that habit change takes time, so your dietitian will recommend a plan that best fits your needs.
Our dietitian collaborates closely with our physical therapy and strength and conditioning team to align nutrition with your training plan and recovery goals. This ensures a cohesive, multidisciplinary approach to performance and wellness.
We take a no-diet, “all foods fit” approach focused on building sustainable habits—not quick fixes or restrictive plans. Instead of labeling foods as good or bad, we help you learn how to fuel your body in a way that supports your goals, performance, and lifestyle. Our process is individualized, practical, and designed to create changes you can actually maintain long-term.
Results vary based on your starting point, goals, and consistency. Some people notice small changes in energy, digestion, or training performance within a few weeks. More meaningful changes in body composition, recovery, or long-term habits typically take several weeks to a few months. Our focus is on sustainable progress—building habits you can maintain long-term rather than chasing quick fixes that don’t last.
We tailor recommendations to your needs, preferences, and lifestyle. Most clients work on broader strategies such as behavior change, habit formation and practical fueling techniques to maintain long-term change. Some clients receive detailed sample meal ideas or structured plans for a limited time. Our goal is to form habits that eliminate the need for strict calorie counting or meal plans.
Yes, if and when it’s appropriate. We focus on a food-first approach but understand that supplementation can be beneficial to fill in the gaps where nutrition may be lacking. Our dietitian can discuss evidence-based supplement options and help you weigh the benefits, safety and efficacy in the context of your performance goals.
No.
We focus on a balanced, personalized plan that fits your life. Rather than restricting whole food groups without cause, our approach emphasizes nutrient-rich choices that support your goals while allowing flexibility.
Your dietitian will provide practical strategies for managing nutrition on the go, including how to make smart choices at restaurants, during travel, and around social occasions.
